  • Cam Belt

Just fetched the beast from the garage, as previously mentioned it was in for a cam belt and to investigate a fuel leak from the pump. The Garage is a lock up unit next door, and I know the guy well so he wouldnt try to rip my arm off. However....
The timing belt isnt done, as he tells me that there is a kit involved including tensioners and guides and the parts alone are £80, and he would have to allow 11 hours for the job which puts the cost to around £300 ! Thankfully, he didnt think I wanted to spend that kind of money. And he couldnt find a fuel leak either. Before I put in the new glowies it took ages to catch and start and it was dripping deisel onto the drive from somewhere around the pump. The leak seemed to stop once it was running, and now that it starts first time it doesnt seem to leak at all. The mechanic ( admittedly no surf expert but competent all the same) wonders if there is some kind of pressure release on the pump or feed that was being actuated during extended periods of turning the engine over without it firing. But to get the pump off (he says) is another major job and will cost another bundle of £££££££'s. Is the cambelt really that hard to replace? And is the pump that hard to get to? The cam warning light isnt on but the odo reading is 106000 km. I dont know if its been replaced prior to me getting it and isnt due yet, or if the warning light isnt working so I wanted to be on the safe side. Has anyone out there paid to have one fitted, and how much did it cost? Help and advice please.

The tensioners aren't cheap. That price he said is about right for the genuine Toyota ones. If you do a search, however, NiftyNev posted a compatible number in the 2.4 section within the last month or two.

With regards to the time he's quoted for the belt change, that's excessive.

With regards to the pump, it's fiddley, but you can change the top seals with the pump in-situ. They are generally the ones that cause the leak.

Cheers Matt. If Im carefull about gettin the timing marks aligned, is it a job that I could tackle myself or do you need specialist tool to change the tensioners etc? Im ok with a bag of spanners, done plenty of mech on previous cars but wondering if the beast is a bit too 'specialist' for the average home mechanic?

Thanx Matt, doesnt look that daunting after all. Just been on milners site, cam belt is £15 but there are 2 tems listed for tensioner. Cam belt tensioner gear and cam belt tensioner (smooth), both around the £85 mark. Am I looking at the right bits and do I need them both?

I may be wrong, but I think the smooth tensioner is the necessary one. Try a local bearing supplier with those numbers Nev supplied. You should get them quite a bit cheaper.

just reading info from that link, it says check idler bearing for noise or play and replace if any play present. Whats the chances that it'll be ok and not need replacing? I dont want to seem like a tight a*se, but I really need to keep the costs to a min.

Check the geared one, but it's false economy not to replace the actual tensioner.

If your worried about costs, wait till you start clocking some miles up! That fuel tank needs regular filling up.

When I had my head replace the mech noticed play in one tensioner ( the toothed one ) and noisey bearings in the smooth one so I got them from toyota for about £80-90.

I couldn't say about the time involved, but he said the book said about 12 hrs for the whole head replacement includind cam belt + tensioner+ idler.
TonyN would be able to give you the correct info as he's done about a million of them!

Your mech wont be able to tell if the parts are u/s until he has the cam belt off, so if you can do without the vehicle for a few days while parts can be ordered it may be better to have it stripped and see whats what.

Hey guys, sorry to bother you again, as i did in the other thread, but i'm just trying to get some part #s. Surf's aren't in the system over here in canada, so i have to come up with a number to give them to get the part kind of idea,

I was wondering if you gentlemen could confirm that this is the same timing belt i need (or provide a part number for a correct one)

As well as part numbers for replacing the tensioner and pulleys.

Thanks again, and if there's a thread i missed with this info, feel free to point me in that direction, That would be fantastic

                      Much Obliged

Post your chassis or frame number and someone can double check. Or, you could download the EPC so you have all the details to hand. There are a couple of ways to get it, mentioned here:

cheers plumb bob, Ive put some feelers out for alternative bearings with nifty nev's part numbers. I rebuilt our lads yamaha bike engine last year after a sieze and the genuine main bearings were ridiculously expensive so I gave the bearing numbers to a few suppliers who cross referenced them and managed to obtain them at a fraction of the price. Hopefuly, the same will apply to the tensioner bearings. If I find a cheap source, Ill post it.

                              Thats the one.

Tensioner pully rarely needs replacing, check it for smoothness and loose bearing. I can count the number I've changed on one hand compared to doing hundreds of cam belts.
