  • Diesel fuel leak

My 93' 2nd Gen Surf has suddenly developed a diesel leak in the engine compartment . This leak is heavy enough to cut my mileage per full tank by a hundred miles a time. The one thing I have noticed is that the leak appears to start after the engine has warmed up and that the leaking stops when the engine is switched off . I,m wondering if this could be a problem with the return line .
    Any suggestions . ?

      1. Is a 2.4 or 3.0 ?
      2. Diesel Leak from where ? Engine, Injectors or Pump, Filter, Fuel line etc

These may help narrow down the Location of your problem & result in a more Precise diagnosis & remedy ......(Injector Pump seals $ha%%ed more likely)

I have had the same prob on 2 surfs now both times it was dripping off left side of engine, both times it was the moulded rubber gasket under the top cover of the fuel injection pump, the gasket is available off the shelf from any diesel injection specialist, there are 2 types, but both of mine have been the specially moulded ones, (other type looks like a rubber band) cost about £1 for the pair last time. If you have TD then bit trickier to change if you do not know what you are doing and cheaper to get it done for you as you can break the pump! IF it is EFI really easy, you can unscrew the cover with 5mm key for allen bolts (you need to remove air filter hose & cover, fuel lines from cover - it is easier to also take the fuel line bajo off as well, I didn't but I am lazy & like a challenge!)- but lift carefully as 2 wires under it - you get about 35 - 40mm to play with, carefully prise the old seal out, with new ones easier if you carefully trim off the little lugs dowm both longer sides with a stanley blade as it is tight anyway & original doesnt have them, you have to feed the new seal carefully over the outside & feed it into the groove - make sure you put it in correct way round/up!!! (Round edge down!) make sure bothe surfaces are wiped clean and reassemble, when you do the cover bolts up do them a bit at a time once in contact at opposite corners until nipped tight, don't get carried away, put all other bits back, start engine, wont need bleeding! & check for leaks...

        Good Luck!
