  • Starting Problems

    Hi

I had a surf for 2 yrs now. Love it to bits. Been having a few battery problems. Lots of very short journeys and cold weather have killed the battery. Have charged the old one up a few times over the year. Now it won't start at all. Went out bought a battery from Unipart £74. Stick the new one on and ....turn the key all I got was a click.....tried a few more times and the same just a click after about the fith go she starts. Great Let it run for a while, turn it of and restarts fine. Turn it off again and now all I get is a click.

    so we can rule a few things out;

I turn key let the glow plug light go off then turn key fully
The engine does not attemp to turn over I just get a click
Some times when I quickly return the key It partley turns over then goes back to clicking

    Any advice from you folks?
    Thanks

Might be the main battery earth at the connection to the chassis, had this on a couple of vehicles, and the RAC & mechs all say starter motor faukty, and turns out to be the earth stap.

Worth checking and cleaning before you spend any money!

Just looked at that and had to replace a cable that had worn half way through. Unfortunatley did not help the starting.

Looks like the starter contacts. Think I will take the starter off and take a look at them then go buy the parts.

Just on little bolt...that you cannot get to...

This has been a Sh1t job that bolt down the back had me for quite some time.... now I have freed the starter motor I cannot get it out of the engine bay arrrrrrr....so I thought that I would fix it in situ.(free and swinging).I have removed the three small bolt/screw that hold the plate that covers the contacts but the plate did not come off??

                Starter free and trapped
Three bolts removed to get to the contacts but plate not coming off

                What do I try now??
(we had snow today and the truck is stuck in the garden )

                Any help please,

                Thanks

remove the primer pump/fuel filter you should be able to work it up through the engine bay then. if you get yourself a body lift you can pull it straight out from the side and get on that top bolt easy

I could not find any tool (I had) that would fit at any angle to remove the hidden bolt, all too big or at wrong angle

I found that I could lower the rachet and socket down the very back of the engine bay between the pipe work and body, while lying over the top of the engine. Then with sleeve rolled up feel down and around to locate the bolt with my right hand. I then held the string that suspended the rachet with my left hand and located the socket on the bolt with my right hand....then used the string to work the rachet, while my right hand kept the socket in place. I could not get my left arm down the gap between the engine and the body (2" wide gap)

Took 3 minutes to get the bolt out once had found it and 1 hour to work out the above.

This method also worked in reverse, but had to use a pole to push the rachet down and the string to pull it up.

                          Anyway Thanks
