Garage have located engine for 1600 plus vat with 12 month umlimited warranty including turbo etc.

Does this seem a little high ? I have been quoted 1,000 so not sure if they are lumping loads on ?

Absolutely gutted as only had surf 11 months and was only on 126,000 km !!

Note even sure its worth spending the 2,500 it will cost as only paid 6,000 for it last feb ??

I feel like ive been kicked all over and half drowned all at once !

      Gutted !!!!

      Dawn.

Sorry to hear about that, mind you the £1600 plus vat for a new engine is chicken feed compared to one for a Landcruiser or a Range Rover. The Cylinder head alone is about £700 so I don't think that is bad. Plus with a good new engine in it resale value will be higher - just keep all the receipts.

I still think that the engine could probably be rebuilt, new head, crank, pistons, conrods, main and big end shells and new rings, however although the parts would be cheaper to do it this way, the labour would be higher.

You may want to think about keeping the engine if they will let you and it's not an exchange unit and then sell it as a rebuild opportunity. If the Block isn't holed or cracked, then someone may want it as a spare or replacement. Even if you get £100 for it (not saying you would) it would go towards the cost of the engine.

It's a shame it had to happen but then I had a Company Galaxy that went through two Gearboxes, 2 front driveshafts and an aircon unit in the first 30K miles. Luckily it was under warrenty and even luckier it wasn't me paying anyway. Hopefully after getting the engine done it will be better than new and you will get many miles of significantly superior driving in it.

      Cheers

i would get a second opinion on the engine, thats some garage if they cant tell an serious engine knock from a diesel knock, the engine can be rebuilt, but it must have done alot more mileage than is on the clock to be in that state, knocking could be the big end bearings, might only need re-shelling if the crank is ok, the mains is more of a rumble and worse when the engine is under load, the imported engines which you mention are normally good and you will get a warranty with it but not sure how long, i would go for one of those if you can get one

I thought it was ok but ..............

            Right,

2 days after picking surf up I tried to clear my windscreen with blwoers and guess what my whole car filled with steam and stunk of radiator !!!

I took it back to the garage and they will not take responsibility for it t all saying that when they took engine out etc they wouldnt affected the matrix.

What a load of crap - It worked before it went in and now doesnt !!

I am just so fed up with it all that I nearly cried !!

I need to get a matrix and they are about 180 any ideas where I can get a cheap one ??

My husband is calling the garage to have a row so I guess I wont be able to go back there now !!!

            Ive had enough !

                Just a thought

Dawn in defence of the garage, might I suggest what could have happened?

If the waterways were blocked in the cooling system, and if this contributed to the engine destroying itself, then it would explain why the heater matrix didn't leak before.

When they fitted the new engine, they probably flushed the cooling system, and that would have removed the rust that was cludging up the heater matrix.

Then when they filled it all back up again, the coolant simply found the hole and hey presto, steam city!

It is no recompense to you of course, as you have shelled out for new everything, but look at this way, if you had bought any other car then the chances are that it could have had something wrong with it, and that it would have cost you money. The amount that you have 'lost' is only the difference between what youu have actually spent, and what you would have had to spend anyway?

                I'll get me coat....

Hello Dawn, tis me again.......just to make you feel better, had to have my engine rebuilt as well, cost $3600 including new head, re-bore, polished crank etc etc so I've now spent NZ$6600 over and above the purchase price! BUT now my engine is good for another 400,000km's and the rest of it is in gr8 nick.

Surf's......they cost ya money but there much more fun than a 'normal' car...hope you get your's finally sorted, it'll be worth it.

I admire those people with the skills/courage to tackle the engine build themselves, I was left with the difficult task of either finding a replacement engine, or asking for a garage to do a rebuild. I chose the rebuild option, the diagnosis was that the Bigend was knackered, and on a seperate note there was a crack in one of the Valves in the head, so that need replacing. The garage have had the car for the past couple of weeks, I took delivery of it this evening and thought I would share the details about what was done. I have absolutly no idea if all that work was necesary, but as I said in my original post a very expensive lesson in the value of regular car maintenance. I can second wibbly wobbly's response. I find that new antifreeze regularly can show up a leak in the cooling system and I have been at the recieving end of accusations that it was "ok before you touched it". Unfortunately it's most likely a coincidence that the vehicle was worked on and then had a fault. It can also happen if the cooling system is left dry for a while and the crud dries and shrinks and exposes a pin hole. Hopefully you will have trouble free motoring for a while.
