  • No heater & Overheating

Hi, I wonder if anyone could offer me any advice. I have a '92 model 2.4 which has been a beauty since i got it last October. However Yesterday when I was out and about with the lovely Mrs and Baby, she turned the heater right down. No problem, done that before, this morning I'm setting off to work.. its cold.. notice the heaters on Cold so whack it right up. nothing its still pumping out cold air. then I notice the temp gauge has gone above the halfway mark for the first time ever.. Luckily here in England its freezing and I havent hit the traffic yet so driving back home keeps the temp down, but 30 seconds at the lights and it quickly rises.. looking through the forum I'm wondering if it could be an airlock. She's parked up now and it never made red so hoping the gaskets and everything are OK. Hoping its something simple connected with the Heater..Anybody got any advice before I take it to the garage and lose this months keenly awaited wages?

ps. I am aware that Monday morning is a bad time

Check the water level NOW. No heat in the heater means one of two things - Air lock / blockage or no water. The temp gauge on the Surf is notorious for not showing accurately once the water level drops because it doesn't sit in water if the level is low as it is at the top of the engine on the thermostat housing.

If there is no water in the engine, refill it slowly with premixed water and antifreeze to avoid airlocks - make sure both heaters are on when you do this and allow the engine to run for 10 minutes with the radiator cap off.

Sorry to sound alarming but the 2.4 Surf is one motor you don't want to run dry. Mine did exactly the same thing before the Head went on it. It was a warm day one day so the heater was off, next morning was a cold snap and I had the heater on a little way, no heat, pulled into a garage, engine was hot enough to fry eggs on and there was no water in the engine. Filled it up slowly after I had let it cool down some, but the head was gone - cracked in 6 places.

Once you have the system filled I would get the cooling system checked for pressure just as a security blanket measure. You may be lucky and just have an airlock but these generally don't just happen - you only get them generally when you have flushed the system and refilled too fast.

    Cheers and good luck.

Andy, thanks for your quick reply. I have noticed that there is small amount of bubbling coming out of the top seal on the radiator and so presume I'm out of water.. there is water in the reservoir. I spoze my question now is how good is radseal or am I looking at a new radiator..

what a way to start the week!!

        Hi!
Start the engine with the cap off, the coolant should not overflow if it does then you can bet that the heads gone. Also, is the coolant in the reservoir a milky grey colour, that would suggest exhaust gases getting into the system if so your heads u/s.

          Overflow pipe

          Hi

I had a similar problem and there was a hole in the hose between the radiator cap and the expansion tank. Luckily I spotted the leak before it totally ran dry, but my car suffered from no heat in the heater. I guess the matrix must be nearly the highest point in the system. The water was expanding and leaking away rather than being sucked back into the coolant system.

Since I got a replacement pipe - no water loss and a hot heater.

          Hope this helps.

          Rob

Thank you all for your help.. have filled up with 50/50 antifreeze and water, added some radseal. only thing I forgot to do was run the engine for 10 minutes with rad cap off. (prob about 2-3 minutes. hope that doesnt matter too much and I dont get an airblock) I've gone for a blast and the heater is ok and she didnt go above the normal temp mark at all so fingers crossed that the rad seals now. I must confess to being a bit lax when it comes to maintenance ect. I will have to lift my game..
Really wish I'd gone for the 3.0 one I looked at now. all this overheating in the 2.4's is a bit of a worry.

Thanx again for all your help. this web site is a godsend

you need to keep checking it evertime you drive it for the next few days 2-3 minutes is not enough to let trapped air escape. top up through rad cap not resevoir
