water pump and aircon. How?

Hello everyone and thaks in advance for any help. I appear to have a leak from my water pump so I am trying to remove it. First problem - the Haynes manual sais to use a screw driver in the starting ring teeth. How can you get a screw driver in? secondly how do you remove the timing belt cover with the aircon connected?

This is on 2.4TD '92 SSRG. Please Help

I suspect that Haynes had the engine on the bench!!!

I only have info on the 3.0 but I assume that the design is similar. Basically you have to take all of the belts off including the timing belt and the altenator and bracket before you can get to the water pump.

I is not something I would want to do personally...

firstly remove the rad cowling and the rad fan together, slacken and remove all belts, from the side undo the bolts on the bracket which hold the aircon pump as the bracket comes down in front of the timing cover, the pump then can be moved to one side (do not disconnect the pipes) now remove the timing cover, then the water pump, also i would replace the timing belt while it is stripped down

Thanks. After spending the morning removing all the ancillary items ie moving the aircon out the way and removing all the pipes, the timing cover came off and the water pump was nice and easy to remove. it looks like the seal inside the pump has gone and water is coming out of one of the drain holes on the pump. Is this common??, getting on to milners and ordering the pump and a timing belt at the same time, hopefully if will go back together as easilly as it came appart.

Check the Timing Belt Tensioner bearing and other parts under cover while you have it off.I think the idea of a drain hole in the water pump acts as a early warning that the seals are gone and that allows replacement before the coolant destroys the bearings.When you reinstall the timing cover seal make sure it is fitted correctly.There is a small section at the bottom that has a drain hole.

OK then, its taken a week as I can only work at weekends to get a new waterpum and fit it. It all went really well (even changing the cam belt), got it all back together and tentioned in about 3 hours. I started running it, got up to temp, no problems, decider to run some rad flush thru it, no problems, untill it had been runneing for about 25 mins. I noticed a dreaded drip from underneath. Closer inspecition showed that it was dripping from the bottom of the timing cover.

I've stripped it back down again so I have the timing cover off (much quicker the second time) but I cant see where its leaking from, no water trail, just a constant drip that I sawbefor I stripped it down.

Could antone suggest where it might be leaking from I have no idea what to do now??

WHERE IN M/CR are you mate ? radflush may have removed the radweld that was put in before it was auctioned, you'll just have to trace the drip back from where it comes from

just wondering if you cleaned up the gasket faces properly?? and did you use the correct gasket sealant? dont know the correct name of it but the local spares shop will!!

only know this as just done mine with my mechanic mate :-) (free labour)

Hi Marky, I live just off the Fog lane Parswood junction in east Didsbury.

cleaning some of the rad weld would make sence, but the water was dripping from the bottom of the timing cover, but there is no sign of a leak anywhere. I will have to have a better look in daylight but is their block drain plug anywhere underthe timing cover that may be leaking??
