Hilux down on power and running badly

I`ve had this problem relayed to me over the phone:
year 2000 hilux pickup type thing-ticks over ok but revit and it dies-no power and has a clicking from the fuel pump?
I have assumed that it is the solonoid on the pump,any other ideas?

Could be a blocked fuel fuel filter, or other blockage in the fuel system, or something on the pump isn't working.

Is it making any smoke?

A little bit of smoke.

It appears it may have been a blockage in the fuel tank-he runs v-fatty oil from a greasy spoon that has been warm filtered-has replaced some hoses and blown through others.
