  • Vibration 2,4 SSRX 1992 J

A vibration problem has appeared a few weeks ago.Low level non specific vibration started at around 40 mph and got slightly worse up to 50.Not too bad when accelerating but definitely there when foot off the gas at these speeds..(driving in Edinburgh so not sure at speeds over that). No apparent vibration through steering wheel so the usuals have been discounted.

We have had it running in a garage on hoist and all that can be seen so far is a flattened section in the tubular part of the front prop shaft. It definitely seems out of balance.(shame it cannot be disconnected as 4 wheel drive is never used).

    QNS are
    1. has anyone else suffered this and does it seem like a reasonable explanation?
2.It has been suggested that such prop shafts can be repaired?Any experiences or comments.
3.Anyone know of best place to get a replacement and likely cost?
Haven't had the balls to ask Toyota yet..........and plan to check out some of those breaking Surfs.

Thanks in advance for any comments

    Hello,

If you never use 4wd, why not just take the front prop shaft off - 4 bolts each end and its done.

You can at least try it and eliminate it as a cause (or not ???)

I fear that disconnecting it may cause a problem of balance or support of the transmission unit if we disconnected the front shaft. Both shafts being in place hold it in position.Would be the tidiest solution of all were it possible though.

its a pity you dont live closer as i am able to balance prop shafts.but i think i am right in saying you can disconnect the shaft without it becoming a problem to the transfer box.

You can remove the prop as is a non supporting piece . The transfer box is secure on its mounts aswell as the front diff (try and get one out of an IFS!).
If you want another prop I know Jotto has one for sale .

Firstly, almost every area tends to have someone who specialises in
            propshaft repairs and replacements.

Secondly, it's always worthwhile asking at your Toyota dealer. Sometimes,
especially for non cosmetic items, they aren't always as expensive as people
            think, price wise.

Thanks for all the replies so far.Been thinking a bit more about observations when it was on test the other day.Excuse my lack of knowledge if this should be obvious...................when we had the Surf running but jacked up, front prop shaft was rotating (hence noticed the imbalance) but I am sure no one had engaged 4wd. Question is what actually takes place when 4wd is engaged.............is the action in transfer box .ie prop rotates or does it rotate at all times and drive is engaged at front diff. Our Hilux manual doesn't explain.
The removal of front prop shaft option is definitely appealing.

                Hello,

Toyota use a system called ADD http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/at...chmentid=10475

                (thank Vince for the link)

Both shafts are always driven. Rear wheels always driven.

Front shafts always rotate but only powered when the ADD engages.
