  • What is this smoke

    Good evening

Since i have had my surf and gone out at night when i put my foot down say to get away from a traffic light and i have a car behind me i always see smoke in where their headlights are shining. What is this smoke i have disabled my egr and in doing that alone has reduced it quite a lot just wondering if this is normal as i dont see it much on diesel cars (taxis) and other 4x4s any help would be greatly appreciated i know im probably being paranoid but its sometimes nice to know in not alone.

it is probably just where the smoke has caught the lights that you notice it more if you don't notice it during the day then it shouldnt be anything to worry about.Has the surf been losing coolant or not.

The Surf hasnt lost anything at all, short while ago i found the engine drain plug and drained the whole system which was really dirty i jetted the system thorugh with a steam cleaner with a de liming agent and touch wood all is ok. i have wound the boost up to around 10.5 psi too which does make the surf smoke less at night.

if it isn't losing coolant then i would of thought it was just where the lights are catching it.I think someone else was asking the same thing a couple of weeks back and was told the same thing.

Hi Chris, I dont know if you have ever noticed that if you are following a diesel car at night, you very rarely see smoke trails entering your beam of light. If you were sat in the car that you were following and look into your mirror you will see the smoke, as it will be lit by the following cars lights. This i have been told is because when a light is faced into smoke it passes through it and therefore only illuminates about 20% of it. On the other side, if you place the light behind the smoke so the light shines at you through the smoke all of it will be illuminated. Try letting someone else drive your surf and you follow. Let me know what you see@@.
