I,ve got a 2.4 & I love it,but.....I did have to get the head done.
With what I know now I would buy a 3L or make sure it's had a new head.
    5K is a good price for a 2.4 & I,d want a real good one for that.
Having said that surfs are great & will change the way you view cars forever.....enjoy!!!

        A bare head is about £400 - £500
Everyday stuff is average as long as you don,t need a dealer.
Lots of parts from independents like Milners
If you need to do a head ,it should outlast the car

Hi, complete new head from ukcylinderheads is £590 + VAT. That is complete, cam, valves etc just bolt on and go. You will need the gaskets and stretch bolts. My head went so I replaced all the belts as well, it roughly works out at about £750-£800ish for all the parts.
Think Milners is the same price for a bare head?

Like you I found this forum after I bought my surf, the only thing I would do different now (yes I would still buy another 2.4) is knock the dealer down £800 to cater for the possibility of the head going.

Yes like all things the bad ones get flogged to death time and time again, the good points we mention once and then get forgotten. There are plenty of people on here who have had their Surf's a number of years with no problems.
So its like a box of chocolates 'you never know what your gonna get next'
But whatever happens you will enjoy driving a Surf and won't look back.

One other thing I would do is get a mileage check done with www.BIMTA.org.uk I got my Surf and then found that it had done 30000 miles more than it said on the clock. But apart from that its a great vehicle and I dont think I would go back to my Disco.

                Enjoy

thank you all for the advice i started to get a little worried about problems with the engines after reading about head problems, you wont beleive it i actually spoke to a dealer who told me to stay away from the 2.4 and go for a 3.0 i thought it was a sales pitch but he was telling the truth,i think i may of paid too much for the vehicle now <about 800pounds> but ive still only payed the deposit but i still want the surf and dont really know wether to knock im down again would this be a bit cheeky or what...
also im going to get a few bits for servicing ie- thermo and filters is milners the best place to go or will anywhere like halfords do them...........

Had 5 years trouble free motoring out of my 2.4 and after all the abuse she takes she still loves me.
As for sevice stuff try your local motor factor first, take the engin type and number with you and they should be able to match it up.My local Wilco dose ok by me and now I dont even have to take any numbers with me.

How much is he asking for it and where you getting it from, always worth trying again, tell him to knock £800 off for the price of the head in case it goes or ask him to guarentee the head for at least a year, always worth a try.
If he's really good tell him you will give him a good mention on here if he comes up with the goods.

i might have spotted a flaw in your plan!
you're worrying about the head and you haven't even driven it yet??
the wheels could fall off 100 yards down the road!

hope it's ok when you do drive it!

mind you, that's how they do it in canada!... you're not allowed it off the forecourt till you've paid for it!

If you haven't driven it, then take it for a drive, find fault in it then ask for your deposit back. You can't really get your deposit back if you just change your mind but if its not as stated after a test drive then you can claim your deposit back.
