  • Transfer case question

Can anyone tell me if my LN130 with an A343H auto transmission has an integrated transfer case or a separate one?

The plan for my Lexus V8 conversion so far is to use the A341 auto transmission (2WD) that is already mated to the 1UZ-FE so that shifting can be controlled with the stock V8 ECU.

I've been informed that the output shaft from the Surf transmission can be swapped into the Lexus tranny and then the transfer case can be mated to it so I get a V8 motor and transmission but retain 4WD.

Admittedly I don't know what I'm looking for but have heard that some Surf autos have an integrated transfer case which could make this impossible.

    Any thoughts?

The transfer case is a seperate unit, but you'll need the tailshaft housing of the Surf box to give the t/case something to bolt to. 2wd gearboxes taper down to the prop shaft.

Yep, I think all the time!

Are you a member of this site - http://lextreme.com/ - it's free and quite useful (to say the least).

Thanks Tony, I have both full transmissions so this should be do-able.

Yeah I'm a member on Lextreme but not that many people seem to have the diesel Surf on there.

I'll be glad to have the A341 behind the 1UZ as I was a bit worried about the Surf box handling the extra power.

I suppose you need to figure out whether you want 2wd or 4wd.

Engineering terms 2wd much simpler. Are you ever going to need 4wd? What are you going to use the truck for?

The transfer case should take the extra torque. I used to work in the engineering dept. at Borg Warner in Port Talbot, we made the t/case for the Range Rover mk2. The most powerful RR engine at that time put out @500lbs torque. The transfer case could take over 1600!

The chain in the surf box is the same type (from memory I think a subsidiary of BW make them).I've just been looking at an exploded view of the chain driven case - it scary how similar it is to the BW cases.

Well if I'm honest 4WD use would be very minimal but I'd just feel wrong driving a Surf that was 2WD.

Hopefully due to everything involved being Toyota things should fit together so I can have the best of both worlds.

I've had my truck nearly 4 years and rarely engage 4wd, although when I do its priceless, especially all the horsey stuff my daughter gets up to.

But.... no front diff, front prop shaft or transfer case to worry about, plus all that weight being off the truck....

Anyway, its your call. Send a message to Vatchman - he's got his v8 running - Rover lump.

Just been reading about that one... nitrous? That guy must be mad!

Don't think I'll get anywhere near 350BHP from a stock 1UZ but it'll be miles better than the 2LTE, the more I read about this engine the more impressed I am.

Unless the money gets daft I can't see myself going 2WD. I remember the feeling when I first put it in 4low and I don't want to give that up!

I'm not sure the NOS is connected yet - and he's already able to lay down rubber.

I've been genning up on the 1UZ - quite a lump.

There is that twin turbo LC on the lextreme site - nice engine, shame about the car.
