  • Bad Smoke Problem

I have 92 2.4 Turbo Diesal Surf and have had a real bad black smoke prob for ages. I have taken to local mechanic who said its the electronics but no-one near where I live has the correct plug to tune it. Im giving it a service today. Any ideas to help fix the prob would be much appreciated. I think I will have to get to Brisbane (1500 km's away) one day to get someone with the right plug to tune it up.

It's either a dirty air filter, or worn/restricted injectors. Re-new air filter, and try some diesel fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank.

    p.s. G'day newbie!

the mechanic reckons the fuel aint burning properly and needs to have electronics adjusted but none of the mechanics near me have the correct plug to use their computers to adjust it. is this correct advice?

I will change air filter today to thanks.

It should automatically adjust due to all the sensors the EFI engine has.
Have checked for the fault codes?

Also, try disconnecting the batteries or removing the ECD relay for 20 mins to reset the ECU.

The test port is a small grey plastic box marked Diagnostics near the air filter housing.

ECD relay in the fuse box in engine bay.

Both the turbo light and the engine check lights come on with the ignition, and go out when engine starts. The green turbo light comes on at 2000rpm and above, goes out below 2000rpm.

If the red engine check light stays on or comes on when you're driving, there is a fault and the code will be stored in the ECU.

Type diagnostics into the search box, theres info on several pages.

It could be, but it's an LED soldered directly to a circuit board, very unusual if it has popped.

The only other suggestion Re; the black smoke, is your timing belt is worn and has jumped a tooth on the fuel pump pulley, knocking the fuel timing out.

yes very strange i pulled the ECD out before hand and waited 20 mins and put back in. could that stop the check engine light going on for some strange reason when key is turned to on? maybe it will come back on later
