  • Overheating Query No. 9576

Well, you lot have always cleared up my other queries - heres another one for ya!

2.4 Surf - had a rad replaced 4 months ago to cure overheating probs - Did the job nicely (would have done as the rad was shot full of holes!) - no problems since, but in the last 3 days i am having to run 6 - 8 litres of water daily into it.

I can see whre its leaking from - near the passenger side front wheel - its spraying out of a link to the bottom of the rad and is coming out v rusty even though its clean water running through it? Th electric fan is on permanantly due to this.... ....So, im taking it to the garage tomorrow, but would like a few pointers so as not to get ripped off! (Its not my usual garage)

Any hints as to wot the problem is gratefully received!

      Two questions for you then......

Is the radiator drain tap shut off tightly?
Do you still have the aircon/bash plate fitted?

OK that was more like two and a half questions!

Still got the bash plate on mate - radiator drain tap is where its p*ssing out of - like someone with their finger over a hose, but like i say its rusty and im filling up with clear water? Surely a new rad wouldnt be discoloured like that? Do i need to undo the drain tap or is it too loose?

Sprry for daft $$$$$$ questions - used to bikes not this!

The rusty water is probably from the engine's waterways. It's advisable to use de-ionised water of even clean rain water for cooling systems.

Remove the drain tap, (catch any anti-freeze in a bucket) and give it a clean and inspect the rubber seal. There might be something obstructing it and preventing a pressure tight seal.
Another thing to check is the tightness of the hose clips. Once removed, the original Toyota ones are cr4p at re-sealing! best fit new ones.

Where did you buy your new rad from, only a certain supplier has been mentioned here before for very sub-standard rads that don't last for very long?

The drain tap plug is probably cracked. This can happen with age or if they are screwed in too tight and the threaded section seperates from the top winged section.

                  leak

There is an " o " ring around the drain tap, we have seen some split, this could have gone on yours.
                  Cheers, Steve.

Just had confirmation that its the plastic seal around the rad-drain. See, not always the infamous head for all you fellow paranoid overheaters!! Thanks again guys, top advice as normal...
