Having read some posts about not using the 4wd on road... I'm a little worried about something that happened with my new 2.4 auto...
I had been off road down to some local lakes... which involves some really muddy field work and a ford... once i got back to the road I pressed the button to turn the 4wd off... and the light stayed on... drove a few meters... still on... checked button off... light still on... drove a few more meters... light still on... put her in reverse and backed up a little... light goes out... mmmm
also since this happened ive been getting squeeling from the front wheels when turning at low speeds ie in carparks...

is this all normal (I know im not)... or shoudl i panic?
    Cheers

I'm no expert on this but I have read that it is normal to reverse a little to get the 4WD off if it does'nt do it going forwrd. Providing you only went forward a little way (meters) at a time you should not have done any harm to your transmission.

If you are going straight it sholud not matter either as adverse things only happen in 4WD when one wheel is trying to travel further than the other (i.e. going around corners/bends).

Have a look at the diagram, your ADD system may need greasing.
When the button is pressed, a collar slides accross to lock the driveshafts together so they both turn. Yours could be sticking in the locked position.

        Or a faulty solenoid.

Where excatly are the greasing points, only I've not noticed one whilst under the motor?

Sorry, I was using a generic term meaning spray everything with WD40.

It also could be a vacuum related problem for not releasing properly, more info here.....

Only joking - mine has been the same for the last three years - and the tyres squeel!

could just be the power steering drive belt slipping slightly when on full lock putting extra strain on the pump, sometimes just needs adjusting
If it aint broke dont fix it
