  • 2.4: what is the real reason for cracked heads?

    Hi all,

Looking to import a 1991 Surf 2.4 with 76k kms. I've read a number of threads on the 2.4 here. I can't seem to determine if the reason for the cracked heads is:

    1) Improper maintenance of cooling system (i.e., head will last if cooling system is maintained and engine does not overheat).
    2) Faulty design of head meaning it can crack at anytime regardless of maintenance or even overheating.
    3) Combo of above
    4) Just the vocal minority who have cracked heads post here, while the vast majority have no probs?

I want this vehicle, but if it is inherently a bad choice of engine, I'll pass. Being Canadian, I can't get the 2.8 yet (must be 15 years old). Perhaps installing a pyrometer, engine temp gauge and trans temp gauge would help identify a heating engine, but again, if the heads crack spontaneously, there is no point in that.

BTW I will be using this vehicle for off-road adventures near Whistler, BC.

    Thoughts?

There was a supposed design fault with some heads where the walls
in the head were a gnat's too thin. However, some heads have gone
which were never in the supposedly faulty batches, and vice versa.
Generally, a lot of the problems are caused by people not maintaining
the cooling system properly. Not all, but most. There are a lot of people
on here with 2.4's who haven't had a moments trouble. Not many post
to ask a question because they haven't got a dilemma.

See to the basics when you purchase it: cooling system flush, rad cap,
thermostat, checking for perished hoses and any radiator leaks, and the
chances are you'll be fine. Bad luck may play part, but after the above,
you know there's nothing else you could have done. Also, when you
consider the mileage that most of these vehicles have already done
before we get them, they can't be that unreliable.

all cars have head problems, its just life? some are more prone than others though and the 2.4 falls into this. I would not worry though, as folk say, as long as you give it a service it should be fine.
      What comes around goes around!!
