  • Front wheel bearing

My car is in for its MOT tomorrow and ive just found the front wheel bearing has a little play in.

If it fails how easy is it to replace the bearing and could it be done by myself with a fair amount of knollege?

    Cheers Steve

You should get away with some adjustment, see here http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsit...ringsfront.htm

Take note that taper bearings should have slight play! Never over tighten a taper roller bearing. I tighten them right up, turn the wheel a few times then slacken off the nut an put the slightest pressure back on, and i mean slightest!! A loose taper bearing is better then a tight one!! They usually have slight play to allow for expansion when hot.

On the o/s/f there is no play and the n/s/f i can move the wheel about 5mm when rocking it top to bottom but i surpose its down to the bloke doing the mot if he feels its excessive.

        Cheers for the help

          well she failed mot

She failed on the steering idler and top n/s ball joint and just an advise on the wheel bearing.

It almost didnt pass the smoke test and failed the first second and third try but the bloke wouldnt let it fail so he put some diesel additive in and kept it in first and took it up the road at 30mph for a few minutes and brought it back in and it passed the smoke test.

Hes kept the car and estinates it will be about £290-£350 for parts and labour.
