Hi I have found out the problem with my Surf..by pulling this hose off (see picture) my truck runs as smooth as a hell..don't know what it does but it has cured the high revs... (see other thread baffled) would anyone tell me by looking at jpeg is this an important eliment or can I just leave this hose OFF..wow I seemed to remember my dad pulling this hose off of a old care he had anyway luck blimey I have just saved myself a new Fuel pump at £800 as 1 garage wanted to charge me..anyway let me know if i will do any damage or if i should replace this??

yes I would have thought both ends, but i have only blocked 1 so far
but will try blocking the lower one as well...are these expensive items to buy?
and should I replace it?
Anyway I am relieved it has sorted out my smoke and high rev problem
Thanks everyone..this is a great website..saved myself loads of dosh and chated to very interesting people on the forum...
Cheers Shiny

Not the EGR, if the EGR was stuck open it would stall at idle or be very lumpy on tickover. If it was stuck shut you wouldn't notice any difference when you block it off, stuck shut is same as blocking it off.
More likely that is to do with the idle speed valve.Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

THAT is the actuator for the throttle body butterfly.
The butterfly shuts when you take your foot off the go pedal.
Its primary functions are:
1.Create a vacum to operate the EGR , not needed if egr is killed.
2.Smooth the idle , its a diesel !! who gives a F... about smooth idle
3. Stop the rough shake on shut-down , see above
4. Create a nice big back pressure to stall the turbo and induce "turbo lag"
5. Generaly make a nuisance of itself and F-up what little performance these motors have.
My little butterfly "died" ages ago and I love it. No need for a BOV now, the turbo stays on boost through gear changes if you are quick enough.
A thoroughly reccomended proceedure that should go hand in hand with "killing" the egr.Simon.O.

Simon is spot on as to what it is but missed one of its functions - the secondary throttle buterfly stays open briefly after you lift off to prevent excessive engine braking which can lock the back wheels- not nice, if it stays open with the pipe off no problem if its closed all the time watch out.

Thanks everyone i hope there are no bets on this one (who will but the beers)
went to Toyota main dealer and he had a look under hood and checked on his pc and said it was the EGR unit it was about £170.
hope that clears it up. must be the EGR.
I have just blocked up 1 pipe.
My truck has never ran so well it responds far better and no smoke at all
Thanks for all the replys shiny
