  • poor starting

I have a starting problem from cold after several seconds cranking over it will start on one or two cylinders with lots of black smoke it will eventually run on all cylinders and drives ok apart from black smoke when under load. The cylinder head was renewed at 163k and it had new glow plus/batteries and filters a few months ago its now at 180k

What engine? Would be helpful if you could pop your vehicle
    type in your profile.
Various possibilities. Are you allowing glow plugs time to warm
properly? Have you Redex'd it yet? Was the air filter replaced as
    well?

      It’s a 2.4
Yes the air filter as been replaced
I do wait for the "PING" before starting but it also plays up when hot!
I have started to us redex but only recently

Still having the same problem could the fuel be draining back to the tank? I recently changed the fuel filter but could not prime it, the hand pump is faulty I think. The only way I could get it to start was to fill the filter and crank the engine over. Are there any replaceable parts in the priming pump?

Sounds like you could do with new glo-plugs too!

A cheaper option would just be to get a standard fuel filter assembly from a local
motor factors. You'd need to make up an adaptor plate for mounting, but other than
              that, straight forward swap.
