  • Where do I go from here?

    Hi to one and all.

Got a bit of a problem and thought I might check with some of the forum users and see what the consensus of opinion might be.

A while ago the head on my surf went, got a new one, and fitted it ok but it’s just possible that that caused the current problem. maybe the oil or piston rings got too hot or maybe its something else, but the point is that according to the local mechanic it sounds like a big end, little end, or piston / piston rings that have gone. Its making a hell of a racket is down on power, turbo kicking in far too soon and with little effect. According to the mechanic it’s either an engine transplant or an engine rebuild.

What I thought I might gain the opinion of the forum on was will it be worth it?

I don’t mean is the truck worth it that goes without saying cos it’s so cool to drive. What I really mean is on a financial basis, much as I hate to lower the issue to that level, will it be worth it. it seems to me that I could spend an unknown amount of money having the engine stripped, rebuilt, and refitted, spend approximately £1500 - £2000 getting a new / refurbished unit and having it fitted, or I could do the nearly unthinkable and sell the good parts and s$$$$ the remainder. I suppose it comes down to this, what’s the truck worth on the road as apposed to what is it worth as spares or repair and is the difference between them more or less than the probable cost of getting it back on the road?

All thoughts and comments welcome, the truck is a 2.4 1994 in red and grey, pretty good order with a full set of 5 alloys.

    Thanks for reading.

Before you do anything give Stevo at Engine Co a bell (link at top of page) as he may be able to sort you out for less than you are being quoted.

Thanks for that tip Tallyman, I dont intend to rush into any decision so I will give myself time to explore all the options that I can.

I would certanly give this stevo bloke a ring. i have never spoke to him, but he will obviously help your more on the basis that he seems to get alot of surf work. The mechanic you spoke to must not be to hot on the subject as in my experiance there is one hell of a differance between a burnt out piston ring/s and a bottom end bearings? But if it was well cooked the last time, i would say Main and big end bearings which is no hardship if you can get them? Might not be cheap to be done in a garage though? Still would take a good few hours.
