    Thanks for that.
My is a manual anyway but I can see your point.
I changed the thermostat this afternoon and checked the belts. While I was running her after changing the stat loads of coolant poured out of the overflow on the header tank cap. So its back to the drawing board :-(

Im intrigued though about the viscous fan. I presumed that the fan stays still and starts up when the engine needs cooling...well mine goes all the time. Is that right or yet another fault?
Also i note you mentioned electric fans. Is this a bolt on to boost cooling and if it is, where can I get one?
Went to japarts in edgeware north london today. Excellent store with very helpfull staff. Recommended !

The viscous fan should turn all the time although it won't be turning "hard" until the oil heats up and locks up the mechanism inside. The big problem with the standard fan is that it leaks oil over a period and the fan won't run properly. Re-oiled mine two years ago and it now seems to run ok, although I've never heard it roar, even when the temp has gone up when towing up hill.

I'm looking to do either an electric fan conversion to replace the viscous fan (and release a few extra horses as well) or fit an additional fan on the outside of the rad next to the aircon rad to give additional cooling when towing, hence my as yet unanswered request to Kenlowe. Also considering a bonnet fan to exhaust all that hot air out of the top of the engine bay to aid overall cooling and also help keep the windscreen warm on those ice cold winter mornings.
