  • UPDATE on £5,000 Cylinder head

Update on situation re cylinder head

    can anyone answer this question

if the oil pump or big end has gone, can it be in anyway related to the cylinder head replacement?? and to examine the oil pump does the cylinder head need to come off again??

The garage is now saying that they want an independant examination done to determine this and that the cylinder head will be taken off again and an examination carried out.If the breakdown is not covered by warranty that we will be invoiced for the investigation and examination.

I'll ask the guy who looks after my surf later, but someone (Tony?) is bound to know the answer to that. See my post on your last thread also.

      big ends and oil pump

No the cyl head does not need to come off to check big ends or oil pump both these are checked from bottom end ie inside sump.
If it aint broke dont fix it

I am speechless, after forking out that kind of money I would have expected a new engine, as far as I can tell from my service manual the oil pump is located behind the timing cover, and therefore you would not have to remove the cylinder head to look at it, also, for the big ends you could inspect them with the sump removed, you could inform them that they could purchase a replacement engine even on Ebay for £910 delivered with 3 months warranty, including fuel pump, alternator, aircon pump!

I would seriously make a call to watchdog, and the local radio station, and the local papers.

Seperate investivation "my @rse", my suspicion is that they will have a look, realise that they fitted the wrong gasket or something stupied, and damaged your block and pistons, or caused a serious problem somewhere and they will make it look like it's not their fault. I dunno who this garage is, but me thinks I am in the wrong trade!

Hi, sorry to hear about your woes. Just to add my bit, I had my engine re-built, and a new head fitted to it, for £1850+ vat, by Stevo at Engine Co.
Unfortunately I can't send you a copy of the receipt as I have since sold the Surf, and I let all my receipts for work done and servicing go with it. Drop Stevo a pm and see if he can help out with some information on how much it should have cost you. I don't think anyone has done more Surf engine work than Steve.
            Good luck,
            Pete
