  • Low Fuel Light

    When does it come on?
I've had my Surf for 3 years and never had it on. I have decided to run it till it comes on but the guage is now well below empty and it hasn't come on yet so either the light is bust or it needs to get even lower, anyone give me an idea where the needle is when theres comes on please?

    Ta

    Paul.

Mine comes on at about the point where the right hand edge of the pointer leaves the left hand edge of the printed portion of the lower bit of the fuel gauge. (deep breath!!)

The light isn't an on/off type, it gets brighter the less fuel there is, within reason. If you accelerate hard, the light should come on (only if you're low on fuel, obviously!), as the sender is at the front edge of the tank.
    It just does, OK?

Mine has only come on once and that was at the, "Oh fu$$ where is the nearest garage?" stage. We were on the M25, with the caravan hitched up, on our way back from Devon. The needle was almost on the bottom of the scale.
      It's only a hobby!

I had mine for nearly two years before I knew if the light actually worked.
The needle was so far over to left that I thought "this thing is running on vapour" WTF is a gas station???
Apparently they go for a bit with the light on..................and NO! I do not know how far.
Some of the Aussies have some better figures.

I think its set to come on at the worst possible moment..........
isnt it suppossed to come on at 5 litres or so?

Well today my guage was so low and so far off the print it was nearly over the light itself, and it still hadn't come on !
I didn't want to risk it running out so i filled up so i am none the wiser now.....

By the way, how do you start the engine when it has run out of Diesel?

First put more diesel in the tank. (sorry couldn't resist).

Prime the filter by pumping the flat thingy on top of the fuel filter until it goes hard (or until you get bored and try to start it anyway).
                    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

So basically you are pumping a "thingy" until it goes hard?

                          running low

I don`t want to state the obvious, but I hope you are carrying a jerry can fullof diesel if you plan to run your "russian roullette as low as you can go" experiment again.
I don`t imagine it`s much fun running out of fuel and it`s a dead cert it will run out in the $$$$tiest place imaginable.
If you pull the wires from the sender, will that not fool it into thinking there is no fuel. just a thought.
                          Be lucky..
