Here's a puzzler for you all out there! Got a 2.4 TD EFI K reg. Great bus. Glad I changed to Toyota from Land Rovers. Had it 2 years. Never missed a beat, dripped oil nor leaked water, but suddenly it's developed an intermittent problem - occasionally after starting for only a couple of miles until engine is warm a little bit of jerkiness from time to time and clouds and clouds of black smoke - if you dare touch the pedal! The revs tend to increase by about 150 rpm Cleaned injectors, new air filter, new fuel filter, new fuel lines as some bright spark told all this was due to an air leak. But, Hey it disappeared. Thought it was cured, but a week later it happened again, only this time I was being followed by what I could make out through the cloud of billowing black smoke to be a police car. Luckily, as usual it got less and less until it cleared. The police car passed me - looked in at the car and took off. Once it has done it first thing in the morning it will not do it for the rest of the day no matter how many times you start and stop it. I wondered if it may be a temp sensor, but my local Toyota dealer, helpful as he was, could not find some of the sensors on his microfiche! The car runs well otherwise. Anyone got any ideas out there!! Please.

Are you sure the injectors are cleaned properly?

Put a full bottle of reddex in it with only half a tank and drive it like you stole it.

This is your first and easiest step.

    Welcome by the way

    Al.
I used to have a surf me!

Thanks folks. Bad news is already put 3 bottles of forte through it and modified the egr (blanked it off). Thing is it's not smoking bad at the moment - just a whisp occasionally, but like I said once its done it first thing in the morning it doesn't do it again. I think it has something to do with temperature because the warmer it is the less it occurs.

So does this mean you're from North Wales then? I'm in the Llandudno area.

I go through Llanfairfechan every morning to work in Llandegai and she does'nt blow smoke when I go thru there - she's warm and running sweet by then.

Thanks Al in Yorkshire, but have put 3 bottles of Forte cleaner thru it already, as I suspected injectors, but like I say it doesn't do it all the time. Most annoying, but thanks anyway.

my first call in the morning is llandegai, industrial estate.

have you changed oil and filters yet? not saying that will help but you never know, or try a specialist oil ie something with an additive in it to soften things like valve stem oil seal.
            just a thought

              Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. She's coming up for an oil change, so it won't harm and it'll do the engine good, but I have a sneeky feeling it AINT'T GONNA HELP. I'm the dirty blue Surf parked opposite BT. I have a feeling I'm going to have to have the injector tips replaced and am wondering whether one of them is not spraying properly.

If it's running fine when hot, it sounds like you need new glowplugs.
Also the tube that goes accross the top of the engine from the air filter, give it a clean out as there's probably oil deposits in there, also the rubber pipe coming from the rocker cover to the air tube may want cleaning out.

                    Hi John
Have we met before? If so I can't place you. Next time you're passing - stop, and we'll have a natter.

Thanks Vince, when this rain stops I'll rip the duct off and give it a damn good clean.

Do you know where I can get cheap glowplugs as money has run out fast?

I think Milner's have them at under a tenner each.

Thanks Matt, looked up Milner's catalogue, you're right - £5.50 each. I'll order some this week.

                          Cheers Mate
