  • 3 litres a day!!!!

Looking for a good prognosis here! Electric engine fan keeps coming on even though i am putting in 2 - 3 litres of water a day! Have tried burping it to no avail and on dinihsing any drive, water is frankly pouring from the left hand side of the engine.

So, its booked into the garage wednesday but does anyone know what it sounds like? Hopefully a split pipe?

Not the head though eh! (winces and crosses fingers...)

I had something very similar, only it seemed to be coming from the front of the engine. it was pouring off the aircon radiator, but I couldn't see where it was running onto it. wasn't 3 liters a day, but probably a pint or two.

In the end I got $$$$ed off and put a large bottle of radseal in, and it's not lost a cupfull since. Go figure.

It will be if you keep driving it with that much coolant loss.

well thats the weird thing though - the coolant levels in the expansion tank are always high - its just the rad. Im gonna get them to totally flush the sysytem i rekon.

Its winding me up as i thought id cracked it myself though...

Sounds like you could do with a new rad cap.

That sounds overfilled - I am sure your bottle has a "Max" line about half way up.

Sounds Like Rad Cap.... Being Full Shouldnt Be A Prob Realy As It Will Just Push It Out Of The Over Flow Pipe.. Its Being Not Full Enough That Can Cause Probs As When It Cools Down It Will Be Sucking Air Back In To The Rad Intsead Of Water.....

what are the pepurcussions of it being overfilled - apart from a shagged radiator!

It won't do anything, any extra water will be spat into the expansion tank and out the overflow.

The expansion tank is always full because the engine is pressurising the cooling system, and pushing it past the cap and into the expansion tank, then out the overflow.

If it has cracks in the head, the vacuum effect of sucking coolant back through the cap won't work as the system can suck air through the cracks for depresserize itself.

Check the crank pulley hub isn't spinning on its hub, this will cause the water pump not to be pumping properly, and get it tested for combustion gases in the coolant.
