  • Has anyone here tried blocking their EGR valve?

    I'm a new Surf owner in Canada. (1990 2.4LTD)
I just got my surf this last weekend.
I'm soort of a tuner, so I like to tinker with things.
I've already removed the 105Km/hr dinger (I have a road trip next weekend)
and removed the little green light rubbers. (now I can see my guages)
I'm noticing that every once in a while my Surf wil just idle hard. never comes close to stalling or anything like that, but just adles hard.

I've been reading up on performance upgrades to the Surf and I cam accross this:

    http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/egr.htm

Now, not knowing what the hell an EGR valve is I started into Google, my first hit was this:

    http://www.faqs.org/qa/qa-7120.html

If you look at the second answer to this fellow's question, it pretty much describes my situation.

Now, before I go and start blocking tubes in my less-than-a-week-old truck, I would like to hear from someone who has actually done this if I can.

    cheers!

      WOW!
tat was a faster response than I was expecting!

      Thanks Bushwacker!!

one of the questions I read in the thread you linked to was a question as to weather this would contribute to the infamous cracked head.

Just a little of what I've read: The EGR valve introduces HOT exaust gasses into the combustion chamber, thus CONTRIBUTING to overheating.

I have read that blocking the EGR can help with overheating and actually assist in AVOIDING the cracked head.

that all sounds like goodness to me, does that check out with you guys too?

Prior to blocking the EGR valve, I fitted vents into the bonnet/hood to expel all the hot air from around the engine to keep the temps down.
As for the EGR contributing to the heads cracking??????????????? the jury is still out on that subject!

HAHA, sounds like a good plan for a poll, hehe.

          1) Did those that suffered a cracked head have the EGR blocked?
          2) How many of you with teh EGR blocked have suffered a creacked head? (on your surf, haha)

          Thanks for the input fellows.

Thanks Bushwacker for the ideas, I'm planning on doing a bonnet/hood scoop with a top mounted air to water intercooler too, so I'll have to take you lead and possible do some extra venting then.

Has anyone here upgraded their radiator to help?
