hi folks, having lots of problems with my 91 2.4 surf. it's been over heating, and i don't have any heaters. on inspections i found out that the pipe from the overflow resevoir to the rad cap was blocked!!, after unblocking the pipe the car still over heats and the overflow bubbles through, i've been searching the forum and it sounds like i could have an air lock, i have had the head replaced once already so i would be one unlucky trucker if it's gone again!

    so I should:
take off resevoir cap and fill with the engine running for 10mins, then put cap on when full and fill overflow one 3rd so the pipe is covered.

if anyone could help with suggestions or let me know if i'm on the right track and doing the correct thing.
    cheers

that is the way to go about it m8 but you could also pull off the inlet pipe to the heater matrix while the engine is running to make sure you are getting coolant to your heater matrix, also may be worth trying a new rad cap..

The best route to prevent this happening in the future to construct a T piece bleed which you place at the highest point of the pipe work usually on the inlet to the heater matrix. From this you can easily get rid of the air that is still present in the system.

Its not expensive to make from a few items from the plumbing supplies using the radiator tap and t piece...shouldnt be more than a few quid

hi thanks for the help, i put the heaters on opened the rad cap, started the engine and filled up. it took loads of water i ran it for about 15mins and lots of bubbles came to the surface, then the water started to boil out so i stoped the engine and carried on filling untill full and put rad cap back on,

my heaters still aren't getting hot, and i wonder if i have a leek in the system so i was thinking of putting some rad seal in as it looks like there has been some type of substance forming on the top corner of the rad.

also sorry not to sure which pipe i should pull off on the 'heater matrix'
        regards

hold fire on the rad seal mate you dont know you have a leak do you????

if your heaters artnt getting hot then you have either got an air lock or a blocked pipe i would have thought!! start the engine and take off the inlet pipe to the heater matrix water should pour out if there is no blockage, also this will help to remove air locks if there is any present...the heater pipes are the steal ones that run down the left hand side of the engine and then they go in to rubber pipes and split off... the one that splits off to the right then goes into heater control mech... remove this one when/if water starts to pour out then refit it top up your water and leave engine running till it gets warm try your heaters again...

if no water comes out of this pipe then you have a blockage somewhere....
