  • Rev Counter Probs

Just after some help with a mates "93" 2.4 his rev counter is sticking at approx 3k revs but when he taps the dash it drops back down and then goes back to 3k revs again.he has had the rev counter replaced supposedly but it is still doing the same.I have suggested that he should dis-connect the batteries for 20 mins to reset the the ecu,
but is there anything that could be causing the problem he's getting.T.I.A

I have done a search but nothing has come up that sorts the problem

The only thing I can suggest is maybe the shaft that the needle pivots on is bent or the needle is pushed onto the shaft too much and is sticking half way round the dial.

How does a rev counter work? Is it some kind of cable? If so, couldn't it be that the cable starts slipping around 3k revs and when he smacks the dash (that's how I always 'tap' mine) it slips totally, then catches again at lower revs once the twiddling of the cable is a little less dramatic.

If it's electronic, I'm with Vince that it's probably just sticking and his tapping is just making it freak out for a bit before going back to its highest possible position of 3k.

I don't know anything about it, I'm just intrigued about what goes on behind there because my (cable) speedo seems to go mad on occasion and, from what I can gather, it's probably the cable's shafted.
