I wont dare drive it now incase the thing goes bang I take it if cam belt brakes its good by engine or is the timing for the pump on a different belt and tensioner I haven't delved in that far only just finished putting in new radiator.
Believe me, if your belt does go, you will be looking at new valves, and a few pistons with a few dents in them at least. The distance between the top of the cylinder and both valves when closed, ain't exactly a lot, so a stuck open valve wouldn't stand a chance.
I have just done a full cylinder head change, and its a big job, mind you I have found a lot of jobs with my beastie have been big jobs
It could be that ERG valve thingy, I blocked mine after I replaced the head, but I know that when the old head went, that left clouds of BLACK Smoke like everywhere behind me, but after I put a new head in and blocked that damn valve it seams much much better.
Now just to fit the oil/seperator and intercooler, "what men in white coats"
I have had a new head and cambelt fitted 7,000 miles ago by one of the most highly recommended experts who did a grand job. I wouldn't have thought that the head was the problem I take it that the fuel pump then is driven on the same belt and not a seperate one. The belt was changed when new head was fitted. Can anyone answer this. My Surf lays languishing in the garden till I find out having spent 2,000 on the thing now I will soon have spent more that the things worth.
I can't afford to put it into a garage still paying for the head etc
Yes the cambelt drives the fuel pump, the timing on this is quite important, the fact that you have black smoke seams to say that it is unburnt fuel, so it could be the pump settings, even though you have this black smoke problem, did the engine run ok, or was it rough??
If you have done all of the things listed before, I know that you have already spent a small fortune on this machine of yours, but get someone to check the fuel pump out, for timing and settings.
My problem was the head, I knew that before I started, so it was easy, but this is an unknown, and I don't know what to say, I wish I lived closer so I could help.
I wish you can find this problem and nail it once and for all.
Have a look at this link, especially the third pic from the bottom. It shows the alignment marks on the fuel pump body/flange. Make sure these are lined up.
Although I can't see them being disturbed when the head was changed, but it's a cheaper fix if they were.
To check the pump timing means removing the bottom pulley again and the viscous fan and timing cover, plus the other drive belts.
1) Does the car exhibit any rough running during these episodes of black smoke?
2) Is this an intermittent problem? if so any more info on this....
When I got mine, it used to chug a bit and blow black smoke especially at 50-70 mph when upto temp. It turned out to be the fuel pump. :-( They are very reliable untill they go!
Also worth a look is the turbo sensor pipe from the sensor on the air box and the induction manifod, these are easy to pull off and often cause smoking when broken or cracked.
I have been flat out at work this week so havent had a second to look at the thing.
It has a slight miss when running just holding it about 40 is most noticable she seems to have a wee miss/ vibration Never noticed it before but might have always been there just now that it smokes makes me more sensitive to everything.
The guy who did the head was a gem I doublt hed have not changed the belt when I asked him so an perplexed thatit should slip but theres not really anything else to do but strip it down to the markes thanks everyone. I will
leave it sitting till I pluck up the nerve to have a go.
The computer got stung by lightening after my last post and I haven't got going again till now.
Surf runs really well at 60mph but at 40mph it judders all over the place and throws out smoke. slow running and just pulling are worst tired the pipe vacume bit which made no difference. Timing alignment seems fine.
