  • Rough starting

Hi guys, got a starting problem- when very cold turn key and wait for light to go out and engine starts but runs really bad- need to give it some revs to clear (which i don't like doing with a cold engine).

So i changed the glow plugs and still no different?? Any other ideas?

By the way just put new engine in and took head off to do gasket/ water pump/ rad/ thermostast/ cap!!

wait for light charlie then wait further still for a dull click then try starting. the lights tend to go out before plugs have done their job. the click should only take a few seconds longer after the light goes out. this might work.

probably a silly question but are you getting full power to the glow plugs?
They can go fast, I can go anywhere.

Hi charlie, If its starting easily, forget the glow plugs, once its running condition of plugs is not an issue. What are you putting in the tank? Mine was always lumpy as a bag of spuds with veg oil in it but fine with derv.

          Could be a help?

            not quite strictly true

To help cold starting diesel engines are equipped with a pre heating system, which comprimises of four glow plugs, a pre heat timer a dash mounted warning light, relays and timers.
The glow plugs are positioned directly in line with the incoming spray of diesel, when the plugs are energised the diesel passing over them is heated to its optimum combustion temperature allowing easier starting.
The length of the pre heating period is determined by the pre heating timer, which monitors the temperature of the engine via the water temperature sensors and alters the length of time accordingly.
Pre heating is started when the ignition is turned on, the light goes out on the dash but the plugs continue to heat for a bit longer, until the engine is started. If the engine is then not started within a certain time the power to the plugs is cut, preventing batttery drain and plug burnout.
After the engine has been started the plugs continue to heat the incoming diesel for a further period of time. This helps to improve cold fuel combustion whilst the engine is warming up, this improves cold running, which results in quieter, smoother running and reduced emmisions (the black smog). Again this length of time is measured by the water temp sensors allowing the plugs to pre heat the fuel until the required engine temperature is reached.

Mine started first turn every time until I fitted a new fuel filter then it took a few cranks to cough and ran like sh*t for the first five mins. changed the filter for another new one and it's sorted and back as good as ever!

Thanks guys- not a bad idea- change fuel filter but isn't there a light that tells you that you've got water in it? I take it the other option is change the temp senders.
Selling it anyway i'm afraid- do 100 miles a day, so too expensive at 20 mpg!
Anyone want to buy a 2.4 ssr-g with recaro?????????
