  • Leak - possibly coolant?

Went to the car this moring and noticed a small puddle of liquid under the engine bay.
It appears to be leaking from the area around the air con rad, and seems to be getting worse as the day goes by.

I also noticed that the drivers side of the engine bay looks like it has been sprayed with coolant as well but the passenger side appears clear.

I have read the other threads, but not sure if this means the head is on the way out, or the rad or something else completely - any help would be much appreciated,

    Thanks

coolant pump went on my 2nd gen, dropping the coolant on the floor in a few hours.

Its behind the cam belt cover and is quite a job.

    Hope its not this.

No - not definately, but it doesnt evaporate like plain water does and feels a bit 'slimy' ()
Its def a clear liquid tho

I unbolted the cover over (or under) the AC rad, and had a look. The cover itself looked clean on the inside, but the rad is in a right state, half of it is clogged with oil and it is all dented around the edges. Is it possible to remove the air con rad and all the gubbins? is it likely to be a big job?
No sign of overheating either, according to the dash thermometer

          My water pump went.

Was checkin water levels and noticed it had droped. Cheched undeneath and could see water dripping off bash plate that covers air con rad. Think on mine the colant was dripping onto fan belt and gettin sprayed about as well. It got worse over time when running at normal temp. My needle never went above half way so never overheated.
Got my pump from Milners. Got a new cam belt to, since the front end of the Surf was opened up anyway to fit the new pump.

Here's a link on renewing the pump

That sounds very much like what is happening to mine - cheers m8

Can anyone confirm that if the engine isnt overheating it probably isnt the head thats gone?

usually, you lose coolant when OVERHEATING occurs, sounds like you got a leak somewhere as opposed to anything more serious..... keep a sharp eye on coolant levels and temp gauge though....

well, taken it for a short run this morning, still the puddle of liquid underneath but it didnt overheat. Just gonne keep topping it up with coolant i think. Gonna check the water pump, see if the leak is coming from there - thanks for the answers guys

Bruce it does sound like the water pump but to me more like a hole in a pipe if the coolant is being sprayed around... have a check under the bonnet with the car on fast idle.

                      cant see any drips flying

Have noticed that there is a damp patch on the cladding under the bonnet, directly above the air con compressor - im guessing the drips are from the belts flicking the coolant around.
I think im gonna replace the water pump - got a mate coming round next weekend to help
