Engine knocking

I have recently bought a 1993 2.4TD Surf and the engine has developed a knocking sound. I have checked the oil and its OK with no loss of pressure and its performace is fine with no loss of power.
Has anyone got any suggestions of what this may be? If its an expensive repair I may just break the vehicle or sell it.
