    Guys,

    Possible problems on the way home from work yesterday (15min drive).

    The temperature on the truck (93 Kreg 2.4td) started swinging up then dropping back to half way. Stopped the truck then let it cool down, restarted and got it home without going into red. When I got out the truck, there was a large pool of coolant underneath. I have been checking the level in the overflow chamber and it has been staedy. When I re-checked it after stopping, the coolant in the overflow chamber was still at a normal level but it was too dark to tell if there was oil in it or not.

    I had the coolant system flushed a couple of months back and the thermostat and radiator cap renewed at the same time.

    I am hoping this is not the dreaded cylinder head problem.

    I need to refill the system before re-starting the engine, to check all the hoses, radiator etc. I may sound like a dumbass but I assume I re-fill the system through the radiator cap on the thermostat housing? Does the heater need to be on to allow the thermostat to open to fill the system? How do I know what the correct level should be, as any car I have had before has had the cap actually on the radiator and you could see the level.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Don't panic......... yet! It may just an air lock. Remove the rad cap, set heaters to hot, start engine and top up the coolant. Keep checking / topping up untill the engine gets up to temp. i.e. the thermostat opens. When it will take no more water, replace rad cap.
    Keep an eye on the coolant level for the next few days and it no coolant is lost, you should be o.k.
    Also check your radiator for leaks when engine is hot.

      I will try tonight or this weekend if this weather does not heat up a bit. Funny that - I get overheating problems when its F*^kin freezin outside.

      What is the best way for checking the coolant level on a routine basis. I have been checking the expansion bottle but that has never moved and generally sits about halfway.

      I didn't think the coolant level could be checked by removing the radiator cap as this only exposes the pipe to the thermostat. Should there always be coolant in this pipe?

        Yep, when you remove the cap, you should see coolant in there with a cold engine. If not top it up.

          Re topping up cooolant

          I found that I was getting an air lock on my 2.4 and that the easy way to clear it was to take off the top hose where it attaches to the thermostat housing and pour water straight into it, bypassing the thermostat and thus filling it from the radiaotor side rather than the engine side... still loses water sometimes and needs topping up, but much better.
