  • can someone help me before i s**** it!!!

hello kinda new so please bear with me
bought the wife a 2.4 td surf mid last year in need of cylinder head
car used to start 1st time off the button before cylinder head was fitted
when we got it back the numpty who fitted the head said the glow fuse had perished and it needed a new one so thinking nothing of it we started it up and drove home
2 months passed and i managed to order a fuse from toyota and fitted the glow fuse and still wont start without about 10 attempts and when it does first start a lot of black smoke and does not seem to be firing on all cylinders at first
after about 3 minutes this goes away and it runs perfect but it is such a pig to start and this keeps running battery down as you can imagine
like i say with the oil leaking out of the old cylinder head gasket it used to start first time every time but now not so
could it be that the utter idiot who did this job has not lined up the timing belt correctly for the fuel pump as i have read somewhere this has to be done
this morning i fitted new glow plugs and it has just ran the battery down to a pulp so pretty peed off at the mo
any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Recheck the Glow Plug fuse. If it is blown again there is a short. This is likely to be because the Glow Plug Rail is earthing. There are insulators where the Glow Plug Rail fits and these must be installed in correct order.

    Insulator with raised centre

    Glow Plug Rail

    Wiring Terminals

    Insulator with recessed centre

    Washer

    Nut.

This isolates the Glow Rail from the manifold mounting stud.

      hi nev
      thanks for the reply
i have done this and have fitted the glow rail properly
starting to think it is down to timing belt and fuel pump not being timed up correctly
      what do you think

Could be timing but with what you say above then this tends to rule that out. Any other synptoms after you finally get it started?

no nev just lumpy tickover for first few minutes and black smoke
this is why i replaced the glow as i thought it was unburnt fuel...how wrong i was
it is making a little more sense now i assume the guy who fitted the head has put the rail on wrong and thus blew the fuse but could he have blown anything else
i have put a continuity test on each glow plug between the pos on the battery and all is fine
now going to test to see if there is any power getting to the glow railthanks for helping nev

just tried to see if power is getting to glow rail and it seems fine as kicking out 14.4 v on multimeter and then going to 7 v when relay goes off
            i am stumped
thanks nev for taking the time to try and help it is apreciated

Do you know if the engine has good compression? Maybe valve clearance is not set correctly.Could be any number of things. I still wouldn't rule out incorrect timing either. Maybe take the cover off and check this?

in all honesty never had a compression test for the simple reason it was such a good started runner before the new head was fitted
if the timing was out would it not run like a bag of nails all the time
i will try and find the time to take off the cover and have a butchers

Firstly, get someone to hold a volt meter on your bus bar (metal bar connecting the glow plugs.......

This was my very first problem with my first surf!

turn on the ignition and check with a meter that their is voltage going to the glow plugs regardles of wether you can hear the relay clunk after the light on the dash goes out.

Need to ensure that the correct fuse has been replaced and is not faulty!

Chances are, if you have been running it for such a long period of time without the ignition circuit preheating I recon you've flattened the ends of the glow plugs.......

Way to tell, is ensure their is power. If you have, I would say the plugs are shot.

If you don't have power, test fues that you replaced, and near by fuses and make sure they are all working.

                    SHould cure it.,

The thing that I couldn't work out was why it would start once warm and run fine...??>?>?>?>?> BUT IT DOES!

My garage had re-fitted the bar and insulaters upside down and casused the same problem!

                    Good luck.

                      Hi Fatman
Yes It Is On All The Time
I Now Have It With A Local 4x4 Specialist And He Does Think Due To Black Smoke Timing Is Out
I Did Not Realise These Engines Were Adjustable Tappets Either So This Is A Thing I Will Look Into
Thanks To All Who Have Gone Out The Way To Help

                        Hi Sparky
Thanks For Replying To Help Me With This Prob
I Have Changed The Glow Plugs And Ran A Continutity Test Between Pos And Glow Top And All Is Beeping Fine
I Know The Insulator Caps Are On The Right Way As A Bit Of A Nerd And Fitted The Carefully Myself As Do Have A Little Knowledge Of Electrics
The Fuse Since Replaced Is Stil Going Strong And To Be Honest Would Not Have Minded If It Had Blew Again As This Would Have Pointed Out The Fault
Charged The Battery And It Started Over With 1st Try But Foot To Floor And A Lot Of Black Smoke
Now Have It With 4x4 Specialist Diesel Fitter And He Seems To Think Timing On Fuel Pump As(and I May Get This Wrong Way Round)he State To Far Advanced Black Smoke To Far Retarded Blue Smoke
Then I Will Be Doing Valve Clearances If He Misses This
It Is Also Now Not Going Through The Gears Correctly(not Sure If It Was Like This Before But Seems It Is Revving Without Any Surge In Speed And Does Tend To Even Slow On Slight Inclines
Just Another Fault But I Aint Giving Up Even If I Have To Order A Brand New Fecking Engine And Find The Time To Fit It Myself I Then Know It Will Be Doen Properly And Just Wish I Had Not Been So Lazy With The Head And Fitted It Myself I Will Get There In The End

Sounds like fuel pump timing to me, as you say it will only start if you floor the throttle, and lack of power on hills.

hi there, the first thing you need to do is check what code your check warning is, this is easy to do you only need a bit of wire to link to terminals in the diagnostic box under the bonnet, you can find out easily, if you carnt find which ones just let me know and ill find the link for you, it tells you how to check it and the codes, because i had a similiar problem was a pig to start run lumpy till it warmed up and it was all down to the engine temperature coolant sensor, which the wire had come off, once replaced and fault light cleared she runs and starts like a dream, hope this helps
