  • Rear fog light

    Hello again all,

I seem to remember someone mentioning in a thread a while since
that the M.O.T required the fog light to be within eighteen inches of the
light clusters. If I have remembered this correctly, does anyone know
if that means in a straight line above and below, heightwise, or does
it infer physical distance, including diagonals, from the clusters? Also,
is there a minimum distance above the road surface that the light has
    to be mounted?

    Thanks once again,

    Matt

      If you mean rear fogs

      FROM THE SVA TEST MANUAL

      – Mandatory, Red, Min. 1 off, Max 2 off.
Mounted in the centre or on the O/S, Min 250mm above ground, Max 1000mm
Lens must be perpendicular to the ground.

So it's on in the middle, or one on the right (offside) , or one each side, at least 250 off the ground, but less that 1 meter.

If you mean front lamps then I believe that these are classified as 'optional lamps' and are not part of the MOT test unless they come on with lamps which are tested but I believe they need to be within 400mm of the extreme outer edge of the vehicle, and less than 1200 off the ground, and thats it,

so anywhere at the edges except on the roof really.

Part 2 Schedule 6 (regulation 20) Requirements relating to optional front fog lamps
      1. Number- a) No requirement
      2. Position- a) Longitudinal: No requirement
      b) Lateral-
      i) Where a pair of front fog lamps is used in conditions of seriously reduced visibility in place of the obligatory dipped beam headlamps-
Maximum distance from side of vehicle: 400mm
ii) In all other cases: No requirement
      c) Vertical-
      i) Maximum height above the ground-
      A) 1200mm
ii) Minimum height above the ground: No requirement
      4. Alignment: To the front and so aimed that the upper edge of the beam is, as near as practicable, 3 per cent below the horizontal when the vehicle is at its kerbside weight and has a weight of 75 kg on the driver's seat
      7. Colour: White or yellow (12/99)
