  • Any help from experienced Surfer's?

    Hi Guy's,

I recently picked up my first surf (2.4td 91), and it has a rusted drivers door at the bottom and a dirty great dent in the tailgate (that was me the other night reversing into a sign.... doh!).

i've bought a new door and tailgate which I am having sprayed up next week. I've already stripped them down for spraying. But can anyone give me any advice or warning on problems I might face swapping over the mech's and stuff from the current door and tailgate to the new ones? I've worked out how to do the locks, but I'm not too confident about the window mechanisms. the door is a hand winder, but the boot is electric.

any help or advice greatly appreciated!

Basically the rebuild is a reverse of the strip down . First part off , last part back on . Waxoyl the door and tailgate once built up as can get messy when fitting up with all that Waxoyl inside . Final adjustments of doors once fitted up as the weight of glass and mechs will drop the doors once built up .You may need to buy some clips etc as some always break especilly on a 15 yr old vehicle .
The tailgate glass is a 2 man job ( from wot I understand) as you need someone to support the glass as you fit it .
    Good luck

out of interest, my doors are going the same way at the bottom outside edge.

is there anything that can be done to prevent the rust from going any further, so that it doesn,t come to the stage of needing new doors?

you could use a rust treatment paint to slow it down, but the only way to get rid would be to cut it out or grind/sand it off and re paint the bare metal

i take it that this a common problem then.

is this where the weep hole is to let any water that goes into the door out?

so whats the best approach, take door card off, pour some of that rust eater stuff into the door and paint the outside with some sort of rust treatment to slow it down?

              cheers scotty

yeah I guess so. it's interesting to see others have experienced the same problem. i was of the opinion that the drainage holes might have been blocked in the past, meaning that water which got in couldnt get out, causing the rust. but it is only the outer sheet, not the inner. hmmmmm...

either way I just went for the new door and spray approach - the rust on my door is terrible (it has a strip of rubber covering it up at the moment) and in my mind it was beyond repair. i'd have had to do some serious grinding/welding/spraying to sort it so bought a new door for £75 from a breakers and then paid a mate another £75 to spray it up. same for the tailgate (thats not rusting... I dented it when reversing! doh!).

picked up the parts today and the tailgate is on no problems! the colour is an almost perfect match, but I think it may be a shade too light. not too sure, but that probably means it doesnt matter!

ill have a go at the door tomorrow. i'm much happier now the tailgate looks normal... it looks soooo stupid with a sodding great dent in it.
