  • 4X4 enganging behaving strange

    Hi all,

Recently while offroad, I had the same problem several times while engaging my 4x4. I have a Hilux Surf 2.4 91 model. While stopped on the sand I would press the 4x4 button and none of the wheels would move at all until I would push the 4x4 lever into the L position manually. However if I turn on the 4x4 while moving I experienced no problems. I also noticed that on slight inclines the 4x4 would struggle to get the car forward on the loose sand and the tyres simply will not spin. Is there some problem with the transmission?

If you move the small lever into 'L' 4WD is engaged straight away, but if you just press the button on the side of the gear lever, you need to move forwards or backwards before the front wheels will engage.

Thanks. But still, one of the times while the car was slowing down on the loose sand I did press the button and the 4wd did not engage, I came to a stop and had to push the small gear to L in order to get it moving. Also as I said before it seems to struggle more while in 4wd then before, is there something that gets worn out that could make the 4wd not perform good or to not have enough traction?

Isn't there something in the transmission or some kind of clutch that could be getting worn out? I have an automatic transmission.
