Hi Fearghal,

Welcome to the world of Surfs. Sorry about the spot of bother. I lived in Malawi for 5 years and bought the surf there and it has been to all countries I was posted to, did blow the head in Malawi and there are many threads in this forum and the aussie forum about the problem. Search to get more info. However below are few things you must make sure that is done with the new head going in. Make sure that there are no leaks or cracks on the engine block too.

1. Japs have some water lines blocked off to maintain the temp, make sure that you get a Gasket that has the water lines open, or if not have the mechanics punch the water lines in the new gasket.

2. Have the Updated water pump fitted.

3. Do the timing (cam) belt replacement even if there are km's to go so that if all is done well, you do not have to pull the engine front end for another 100Thou Kms.

4. It is likely that yours is a 2LTE engine, if so have the injectors calibrated at the same time. Setting the timing is trickey as well, so ask them to watch it closely as the pump tends to jump a notch due to a spring load while the belt goes in.

There is a whole list of things one can do while the most of the engine is pulled, like the turbo bearings etc. depends on the milage, funds and along with the condition of the engine. My advise is for you to search about head engine turbo etc keywords and then do what ever you feel might help in your case.

I agree, but personally i would make sure block is ok, then do the waterpump, cambelt (which goes without saying) and rad cap...oh and pressure test your radiator at the same time. Don't want to scare you but my block had a minute score in it that you could hardly see- now fitting new engine after TWO new heads!! But 9/10 are just heads, i belive.

Unfortunately, by the time I got round there they had finished putting everything back together and it's running fine with the new head.

I will keep your suggestions in mind for the next time it's in for a service.

Welcome to the club!
Most of us are general car dunces but between us and with the help of the more knowledgeable among us you can get the advice/info you need
as to things you can do to prevent this happening again :-

If you have an auto gearbox - fit or get fitted a transmission fluid cooler
basically a small oil cooling radiator
do a search for more info

Another more involved add on is an intercooler that can only help
again do a search for info

also it is worth getting an auxillary water temp gauge as the standard one is not all that accurate

anyway welcome again and enjoy your Surf and you have found the best place for advice and help all you need to do is ask!
