  • How much snow justifies 4WD use?

Drove over to France this weekend in my 2nd Gen, and night-driving in the snow north of Paris was pretty challenging. Not deep as such, but enough of a covering to make conditions slippy - especially in a heavily-laden Surf.

Anyway, does anyone have experience/rules of thumb over how much snow justifies using 4WD on-road? While I love my Surf, it's a shame that I'm stuck with essentially a 2WD truck in conditions like this...

As long as it allows the wheels to slip/spin independently then 4wd is OK to use otherwise you get transmission wind up.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

play it by ear - last year I simply pressed the 4WD button when I needed it (when the grip was slippy) and turned it off as soon as I didn't need it.
