  • Engine replacement question

Hi, I am looking for some information regarding the 2.4L-T diesel engine fitted to a 1990 surf.
Have recently blown mine up, and I have been offered a number of replacement engines. The thing is, the mechanic asked me if the crankshaft is central in the engine, or off to one side. He has said that there was a change to the engine in 1990 and my surf could be fitted with either type.
Is this correct, or the mechanic trying to baffle me with BS?
    Many thanks.

Crank has to be central, or it won't line up with the gearbox!!!!!

Pre 90'ish motors are non-EFI, and you don't have a fitting for the crankshaft sensor.

Thats the only difference, and its no good if you have a EFI truck.

I have a sneaky suspicion he meant camshaft. There were earlier 2L (2L-T ?) motors with roller rockers. Am I right in assuming these are offset and different to the motors with buckets and shims????

I agree, he must mean camshaft- when i was looking for heads there was two and the difference was that one was central and one was to one side. Take off the cambox cover and check- it is probably central.

I have just bought a new engine for mine- buy autotrader and phone some import specialists- 50,000 miles with turbo and pump for £763 delivered.

I think you will find that on the older 2L series engines there are two rocker covers. One is black and the other silver coloured. If I remember correctly the black were rollers and the silver is bucket and shim. That may give you an idea what to look for.

Gents, many thanks for correcting me, it was late when I posted the question, and I was lacking brain food!
Looks as if I have the bucket and shim varient, so new engine goes in next friday and should be back on the road on saturday afternoon.
