Dont go buying a new engine because of this! As you dont know what you are buying STEVO can relign & rebuild original if need be.
Dye tested the head and pots no cracks can be found, checked the block with straight edge and feeler guage, appears not tobe warped.

Question, what thickness of head gasket do i need, ordering head and fitting kit next week.

Primary cause was overheating, the heater matrix was full of mud, cleaned using jetwash, pressure tested rad, flowing ok with no leaks.

Anything else i need to check gents whilst its stripped down, have got my bmw on the road so no mad rush to rebuild??

ordered new head from stevo today so will rebuild in the next few weeks, primary cause of the overheating appears to be a blocked radiator, matrix full of mud so it would appear air not circulating through it, have new hoses ect so fingers crossed itll be on the road soon.

          Troubles

Sorry to hear about your problems Paul, I'm in a similar situation, losing water, white smoke on startup and black water in the expansion tank. As I an off skiing for the winter soon, I decided to get Stevo to replace the head and cambelt next week. Although its running ok at the moment, all the signs lead to a problem occuring soon. Better to be safe than sorry, mine too began by me not topping the water up and having a knackered rad cap, it overheated on the mway, and never been the same since. ..
Keep it greasey so it'll go down easy...
