        Is the light on constantly?
        Does the turbo light work?
Does the red light come on when the turbo light goes out?

        Questions, questions!!
        It just does, OK?

It's o.k. don't panic. It's just letting you know that there is a problem somewhere in the engine. There will be a code stored in the ECU and you need to extract the code to find out what the problem is.

The turbo light is not working now although the sound of the turbo is still ther when the turbo kicks in

ECU - you have now lost me completely, sorry to sound dull but not sure how to extract the code

thanx everyone for your help, I love my Surf and dont want it to blow up on me

Vince... what would having work done do to cause the light to come on, you may remember that i asked you about the light the other day, mine comes on intermittently, cant get to the bottom of it...... but...... the turbo was removed to fit new gaskets to the low pressure oil pipe... do I need to reset something ?

No I havent had anything done to the truck recently at all.

Am going to print out the code thing in the morning and have a look then.

It was going ok last week but now seems to have lost the will to live

It could be something simple like a sensor has become loose or disconnected. The usual suspect is the airflow sensor.
The air filter housing has a bend in the tube coming out of the top of it, in this bend there is a rubber grommet and there should be a black plastic probe/sensor pushed into it. Sometimes these can fall out or get forgotten to be plugged back in after maintenance work, and can be found dangling by it's cable down the side of the engine.

Also, to reset the ECU, disconnect the battery or both batteries for 30 mins.
                    then re-connect.
Where abouts in South Wales are you ?

Here's a pic of the sensor that should be plugged in....
This is the 3.0 litre engine, but it's the same idea.
