Mine had it's head replaced before I bought it ( yes I got the warranty paperwork)..... plus they fitted an adjustable Turbo timer and an additional electric rad fan.

It only appears to be a problem on the early 1990-92/93ish 2.4 engines (not the 3.0). Not as common as you think, just talked about time and time again so it appears in your face every day and just looks really common.
A bad batch of poorly designed heads were fitted to a number of Surfs mentioned above. Basically the thickness of the wall between the valve guide and waterway is a tad to thin. On the new redesigned heads its slightly thicker, not that you can tell with the eye, you'll need a vernier or like to tell.
There was a local recall in Japan for the heads to be changed, so you may be lucky and get a Surf thats been in for the recall you may not.
All in all its a talked to death subject, on every other page so just appears to be common, when you cut through the surface and look at the people contributing to these posts there are not that many new people. Just same old subject, why, because we love to talk about the bad things till we are blue in the face, the good barely get a passing mention.
