  • Strange Noise!

    Hi All,

The surf's got a rattle, it sounds like somthing loose - a metal on metal rattle. It sounds like it was coming from the inside of the air con unit, I have removed the air con belt but the noise is still there.

I have read on here about a metal plate coming loose somewhere inside the front o/s wheel arch... I have looked but cannot find one anywhere. Can anyone put a picture of where it is for me!!

any other suggesions - I don't think it will be this plate - but it is worth a try at first.. the rattle is at its worsty at about 2500 to 3000 rpm, it has been getting worse for about a week. It is almost certainatly coming from somewhere near the air con compressor

    Thanks!

    Joe

Check all the heat shields near the turbo

have a search for 'oil filter removeal' you should find some pic's of the access plate which comes loose. it's under drivers side wheel arch, directly behind suspension strut divideing the wheel arch from engine bay. failing that check exhaust heat shield underneath. it can be like finding a needle in a haystack looking for a rattle!!

      cheers.

You could also check the shrouding around the fan as it's in 2 bits that are bolted together, so perhaps one of them has come loose.

Yep, I second that, mine started to rattle a few days ago but sorted now.

solved a rattle/jingling noise on truck that has been bugging me for 18 months, last night.
it only occured about 17-1900 rpm

I had given up a while ago thinking it was a noise in transferbox/gearbox
but last night when replacing a broken jubilee clip on exhaust heatsheild
i discovered this rattle was caused by a snapped peice of bracket that joints to a shield over the front propshaft - at the double-cardon joint, near where it exits transfer box
well chuffed at fixing that, as had thought it was a rattly chain in transfer box.
only dicovered by accident as i leaned on the sheild as i was reving engine to check that exhuast heat sheild rattle had gone.
