  • NCT (MOT) Failure on Emissions

    Chaps/Chappettes and fellow smurfers

My dearest Smurf and favourite work horse has emissions that are at 9.28 M when the limit it should be achieving is 3m. Now what can this camper do to reduce my emissions?

Anything else I can sort but emissions I am at a total loss.

    What's the suggestions team?

    Cheers

Hi Chris, have you done the EGR mod?

A new air filter and some fuel injector cleaner in your tank will help a lot.
Also before you take it for an emmisions test, give the truck a got run, with a bit of high speed if you can to get the engine really hot as this will reduce the reading too.

      Good Morning Butty,

I did not do the EGR mod as I was advised it would raise the emissions. I did intend to do it after the test. I have a new filter, and the engine was warm. I'll chuck a load of cleaner into thsi tank and I will also c get a nice Veg mix for the next test (I hear this makes the emissions a lot lower as well). But I am three time over the limit to I have some serious work to do. I'm also hoping to avoid toyota, as they are ****** expensive.

Maybe look at getting the injectors seviced / changed, as they maybe dribbling rather than spraying.

It only raises NoX emissions, which they don't test usually. But blocking it only masks a problem anyway, a properly working engine with a correctly working EGR shouldn't be a problem. if you motor is out of tune, and running higher than normal emissions, the EGR will make things worse.

The main reason to block the EGR is stop the smoke under heavy load that it produces.

A good service normally cures emissions on a sound motor, change all the filters, oil and give it a strong dose of Radex or similar and make sure its properly warmed up when you take back after a run up the motorway at high speed.

                  Sheep,

My first and worst of 5 tests in two years (yes its possible) was 9.99

All the above is good advice but wont work (Murphys Law)

I can talk you through adjusting your fuel pump if you want to get thru your retest. After all the additives (paraffin/wynns/petrol) and hot hours up the dual carriageway I still couldnt get below 4.5ppm. Theres a single bolt on the pump at the rear end of it which determines the max fuel injection over all 4 injectors. As far as I can remember a 6mm socket is needed to adjust this bolt in (idle up) or out (idle down). Before you can adjust this nut a 12mm? socket is needed to undo a locknut which fits over the all-important bolt.

These socket sizes might be wrong and I cant check as my surf is gone 6 mths now. Various extensions and universal elbow fittings are needed to turn them too as its a no go area for hands. A good 1/4inch socket set with a variety of extenders and knuckles will do the trick.

I pulled up down the road from the NCT garage and idled her down till she almost couldnt keep running and then brought her in for test, the result was so ridiculously low only a moronic tester wouldnt smile at the achievement. Outside with your cert, go round the corner and readjust the bolt the exact number of turns or semi-turns and away with ya like a galoot!

I bet I could explain it better if you want and I bet I have pics taken coz thats the kinda gob****e I am

I went to toyota to get my sterring idler, drop./drag link and all the malarki done, I was assured a clean bill of health and the yes this morning you guessed it, failure worse than last time.
Apparently if you go to a Toyota Garage and then produce the emmissions recipet from thier machine you can dispute the results from the testing garage. Toyota here (having extracted some cash from me last time) are keen to get it through, so thursday morning is the retest. Can you send me the pics of what you did and I may try that if it fails again.

                    Cheers

                      Hi There,

The easiest and cheapest way to get emmisions down is to run on veg oil!!! Stick about 20% in at this time of year, it will run with no modification on that amount - If you are uncomfortable about doing it all the time just put diesel in next time you fill up.

I generally fill up once with veg oil / diesel mix and next time with just diesel - when I went for MOT a couple of weeks ago i had a veg mix in... the emmisions were that low they tested it twice as they thought there machine was faulty..

20% is approx 11l of veg oil based on a 55l tank

                      Cheers

NCT (Irish equivalent of UK MOT for private vehicles) lasts for 2 years from the anniversary of the first registration of the vehicle. ie new car in Nov 2005 will have its first test after 4 years in Nov '09, and every 2 years thereafter.
