apparently the garage say they cant feel it working and reckon its sometimes not allowing fuel on start up so engine turns over but wont fire

Not sure why Toyota don't have a part no. for this as it's a standard part on most diesel fuel pumps and even on older fixed jet petrol carburettors. My daughter's diesel fiesta had a problem with the solenoid sticking so not allowing the engine to stop, as it's the solenoid which blocks the flow of fuel to the injectors, thus allowing the engine to cease to fire.

Might just need to be removed, cleaned, tested and put back. I believe you can test them by putting a voltage across the contacts and earthing the body, which should make the rod/plunger/valve tap in the body move out to block the fuel inlet pipe. Carb cleaner should do the trick if it is just dirty.

Toyota don't list any parts for the fuel pump, just the whole pump. 'You can't take it apart' said the parts guy last time, (I had one in bits in front of while on the phone!! ) I think a deisel specialist will be more helpfull than the main dealer, its just a standard Denso unit, and they probably get parts direct from them.
