    i have a 1991surf ssr 2.4td auto LN130.
its been perfect for the last 2yrs until this week.
driving down the road as normal when all of the ignition lights came on & stayed on, at the same time that annoying buzzer from the brake check relay came on & stayed on.
with all this going on the car still drives perfect(if you are wearing ear plugs or have the sterio on full blast)
i have checked all the fuses & relays i can find !
somebody said it could be the altinator.
can any one help!! my ears are desperate

    Hi Mate

Exactly same thing happened to me a couple of months ago...

It started by the dash lights and bleeper coming on whenever i used anything electrical and then progresssed to coming on all the time.

I turned out that the solinoid on the alternator had burned out so there was no charge getting to the battery.

I was told i would need approx £400 for a new alternator as they thought that the solidoid would break if they tried to fix it.

I took the van back home and did a bit of playing... I took the alternator off and did manage to get the solidoid out and just fitted a new bolt and wire..

It sounds like you got exactly the same symptons... the easiest way of checking is to test the battery with one of those amp meter thingys... You should be able to see if its the solinoid or not though - follow the high amp (Thick) one from the positive terminal on the batteryt to the solinoid on the alternator... The altenator is on the left of the engine under the air con pump

Becareful when driving- I was told that if the batteries get too low the engine will cut out... try to avoid night driving etc.

oh... one other thing... i know it might sound silly but have you checked the tension of the belts... if their loose they might not be turning the alternator??

The sooner the better. If you drive it too much without any charge from the alternator you could also knacker your battery(ies) pretty quickly as well.
