hi steve we chatted recently about my 2.4 and its blown head . we had it 6 days from a dealer and it melted basically - does this ring a bell? any how they reckon theyve repaired it at a local garage - we had to give them the chance to do it by law. reckon theyve put on a new modified head from foreign car spares ltd for 275 quid total bill 998 quid although we offered to supply the head after speaking to you. any how its now starting like **** and belching black smoke in the morning(only had it back 3 days) firstly whats the likelihood of this head being a good one at that price and also the garage said we should replace the rad to prevent same thing occuring again were getting extremely paranoid cheers sarah ps could i call you to get some intelligent advice about this ??

I wrote a email reply, got it didn't get delivered for some reason.

      Short version.....

The radiator difference is B/S, they are all the same. The black smoke could be something just not attacted properly, check all the vacuum hoses and plugs. is it running OK apart from the smoke?

hi tony thanks for that - since i posted, my husband drove 5 miles to work and noticed a horrible noise more black smoke and basically drove it to the garage so they could see what was wrong. had it all day today and have now basically said its shagged!! ?compressor knackered ? turbo knackered etc etc and worse than that the garage siad it must have been like it when we bought it - well, no **** shakespeare !!! i feel a call back to my mates at trading standards coming on help hubby just got home and said the garage now think the rings have gone - suggests a compression test to see - he says they could have gone due to the overheat or already been buggared. garage says no one would check the rings when replacing the head

We had a new head put on by a cowboy garage, last year.I was naive at the time. It showed exactly the same symptoms as yours before going bang big time on the motorway.
Stevo rescued me and fitted a recon engine and turbo.
It's clearly been fitted by a genius, it never smokes and is as smooth as silk.

tony my hubby just got home and says the garage think the rings have gone and may have gone as a result of the overheat or already been buggared. he said that no one would check the rings at the same time as fitting a new head - does this sound ok - he is now suggesting a compression test - sounds expensive

A compression test shouldn't be expensive, it'll let you know how things are in the engine, For the rings to be buggered by it overheating, it would normally show marks on the bores as well, which they should have spotted while the head was off.

If its just general wear, it wouldn't have happened that quick, you would have noticed it before the head went, worn rings normally pressurise the crank case before the engine starts to run bad, leading to lots of oil in the first half of the intake system, making the engine swallow oil and leave blueish smoke.

Seems pretty obvious to me that the dealer has got a lists of excuses to tell naive (no offence) people who come back with any sort of problem regarding one of their sold vehicles, baffling them with B.S. 'cos "it's an import luv" type of retort.
Threaten them with Trading standards, the sale of goods act, lawyers and the local press.
You are fully within your rights to get a refund or an exchange vehicle. Don't listen to any more excuses!
