  • Judgement day - disaster!!!

Took the surf for it's first MOT a couple of weeks ago and it failed on the emmisions being too high. Eventually got it back there today but the emissions were still to high and that's after me giving it a full service and a blast up and down the dual carriageway on the way there. What should I do? They are saying at the MOT place I need to take it to a diesel specialist (I'm in Cheshire if anyone's local) - the reading was up to 5.13 at it's worst.

    Many thanks for any advice.

get to a 1/4 tank of fuel and add a whole bottle of redex, give it a good run. Also disconnect the EGR for the MOT, if its still high give Stevo a shout he,s in cheshire.

It may or may not help, but Japanese imports in middlewich (of Junct 18 M6)have been looking after mine lately. and they got mine to sail through an MOT. cheapest thing to do might be to get it in with them for a pre-mot check and see what they think

Thanks guys for the advice. I noticed when I was changing the air filter that there was a lot of muck in the pipework leading from the air filter to the engine - that can't help can it but what should I clean it with?

I'm going to add some redex now but I've already used some other stuff and that didn't seem to make any difference. I'll search, but any more piccies/instructions of this EGR thing?

Thanks again, bit p****d off with this - I reckon older cars should be exempt from this sort of nonsense.

Having searched here on this subject, it seems that some folk are actually getting emmisions readings of less than a fifth of mine, with older vehicles. This makes me think that something must be fundamentally wrong with my motor, so what should I check out?

Here's a pic of the EGR and what to do......
              http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/forums/att...achmentid=2565

Just pull off the rubber pipe, and block the end, or bend it in half and tie it as in the pic.

Thanks everyone for all your help. My plan was to clean out the air intake hoses and manifolds and disconnect the EGR, see if that would sort it before getting my wallet out to take it to someone else.

In doing so I found that the air intake elbow between the plastic manifold and the turbo was broken and needs replacement. Could that have had anything to do with the high emmisions? (See that's where my lack of mechanical understanding is letting me down!)

Another thing, this time regarding the air filter. My air filter just sits in the filter box, it isn't clamped down by anything other than the lid - are all yours the same or has something been removed from mine? It had a K&N filter in it but it was covered in dirt/oil so I removed it for the MOT and replaced it with a standard one.

                Cheers

Ah, now, I could be misguided here, but if you had a K&N filter fitted before, The ECU might have sensed the increased air flow and told the fuel pump to supply more fuel to the injectors. When you put the standard filter back in, the engine was still getting the fuel, but not the air so thats probably why your emmisions were high 'cos of the unburnt fuel.

Oh Christ, really? How long will that take to settle back down then, should I put the K&N back in?

I'm not 100% sure this is the case, but just my experience of messing about with engines.
You can reset the ECU tho' by disconnecting your batteries for about 20 mins.

Thanks Vince. Your car looks pretty similar to mine (even the same colour!) so does your filter just sit in the filter box or is it clamped in somehow? I have the UK Haynes manual and the photos in that show the filter as clamped in with a clamping plate and wingnut, before the lid goes on.

                        Cheers

Mine is just chucked in and the lid clamped down with the spring clips.

I think thats a different engine - most sit in with a lid on spring clips as mentioned.
