Just some follow up info - having done the EGR mod, it's difficult to say if there's much difference.

However, I've got to take the ponies up to Builth Wells for the weekend, from Porthcawl. I know the route with the Surf well, so I will know if there are any improvements by the time I get home on Sunday night.

Will post news after the event.

    Best regards
    Dear Lovely Boyo

How did the trip to Bulth Wells go and does this whole EGR bit help or not? I have to ask as I'm towing 5 llamas in a fecking big cattle box from Windsor to Cork in a few weeks and and extra always helps.

    Cheers

Always good to have the Taffia at large!! Thansk for that, will make that mod tonight, still curious, what exactly does is this thingy supposed to do when it's connected? Still seems like the surf equivilant of an appendix to me.

        Cheers

                    ....lol, anyway back on subject..!

                    EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation..?

basicaly a device just to keep the bunny huggers happy and sends warm, semi-burnt exhaust vapour back through the combustion process, thus burning off all the nasty stuff that usually gets flung out of the exhaust.

VW Taro (hilux single cab PU) - 31" rubber, H/D springs and shackles, LSD, 4 pot front callipers, 2.4 N/A Flymo engine..

Actually it's there to reduce the combustion temperature to below that where Oxides of Nitrogen are formed, Abou 600 degrees F I seem to remember. Actually increases CO2 emissions slghtly as well as heavy particulate emissions.

So by disconnecting the EGR, the engine will run hotter?
and when it's connected, how come more smoke is produced if they're being burnt?
You see how confusing this bl**dy thing is?

Engine might run a little hotter, but possibly not as it has to work less hard. Belches black smoke because the engine runs less efficiently and dosen't burn all the fuel - black smoke equals unburnt fuel. As I said, EGR does also reintroduce dirty exhaust which doesn't really get burnt up - just reduces combustion temp. With regards to the increase in temp, the EGR only reduces the burn just enough to stop NoX being produced probably only 20 degress or so.

                              Hi

Approaching this from a slightly different angle, if the valave is rendered useless (or unused, whatever) wouldn't it be easier to remove the whole assembly - as in the aforementioned Pajeros - and get rid of the surplus?

Also, when you do the bend-tie-enjoy method, do you need to block the tube where the tied pipe went to originally?

I'm asking all this because my 2.4 is currently being disembowelled at the hands of yours truly and if it doesn't need putting back, I'd rather not.
And some that smile have in their hearts, I fear, millions of mischiefs

i think on the australian site there is dimensions for a blanking plate if you want to remove the thing completely.
                                but i may be wrong
