While towing the caravan down to Minehead two weeks ago, we got caught up in some slow moving traffic on an uphill stretch of the A303. I had checked oil and coolant levels before leaving and everything looked fine. In fact I haven't had to top up my expansion bottle in the two years since I changed all the fluids. We got around the overheating problem by putting the front and back heaters on every time we were in slow moving traffic and it got us there. The strange thing was that one or other of the heaters would go cold, suggesting an air lock in the system.
In the morning I removed the filler cap, switched both heaters on and started the engine. The engine took a full 2.5L of water.
Lesson learnt. Normal levels indicated on the expansion bottle do not indicate that all is well in the water ways. The truck has probably been low on coolant since it overheated at Langdale back in May.
It's a good idea to occasionally take off the filler cap itself to check the coolant level.
